Pathway construction, a subcategory of road construction, focuses on secondary routes like rural roads, cycle paths, and footpaths. Pathways can have concrete, asphalt, block paved, or water-bound surfaces, with permeability being key for water-bound surfaces. Block paving involves two methods: unbound, which relies on the blocks and base layers for support, and bound, where paving is laid on a bonded base. Block paved surfaces are popular in urban areas for their appearance and ease of repair.

Reinforcing the base layer is crucial, especially on weak subsoils. Geosynthetics like geogrids and woven geotextiles are recommended for cost-effective reinforcement.
